Ist der britische Imperialismus eine historische Errungenschaft oder ein missglücktes historisches Erbe, das die ehemaligen Kolonien bis heute belastet? Die hier abgedruckten Forumsbeiträge bringen kritisch zum Ausdruck, dass, erstens, die "Herrsche und teile"-Politik der ehemaligen Kolonialmacht Grossbritannien die Trennung von Muslimen und Hindi auf dem indischen Subkontinent begünstigt habe, und, zweitens, dass die von den Briten veranlasste Migration von billigen Arbeitskräften von Indien nach Sri Lanka die Grundvoraussetzungen für den Bürgerkrieg zwischen Tamilen und der singhalesischen Bevölkerung geschaffen haben. In einem dritten Statement bedauert eine Inderin, dass auch heute noch in der Schule fast drei Jahre des Geschichtsunterrichts der britischen Kolonialzeit gewidmet werde, obwohl sich die Briten ja schon lange aus dem indischen Subkontinent zurückgezogen haben.

Ausgangspunkt dieser Forumsdiskussion von "Talking Point" ist ein Buch von Niall Ferguson, das besagt, dass der Beitrag des British Empire grundsätzlich positiv gesehen werden müsse, nämlich als Beitrag zur Modernisierung von Indien.
